Lunging whips for lunge work with your horse 

The lunge whip is used for lunging the horse. Along with the lunge line, the lunging girth, the bridle or cavesson, and the auxiliary reins, it is one of the horse's lunging accessories. The classic whip for lunging consists of a stick with a generally ergonomically shaped handle and a long nylon, neoprene or leather whip. 

Correct lunging work with the horse provides a good balance to riding or driving. When properly lunged, your horse will actively approach the bit or cavesson from the back to the front in all three gaits and the back will arch up. The lunging whip replaces the driving leg aid and should also be used with horses that advance well on their own. In addition, the whip helps you to keep your horse on the circle line. 

How long should lunge whips be?

The classic lunging whip measures between 180 cm and 250 cm without a lash. With a lash, lunge whips are about 3m long. The vaulting whip is considerably longer and can vary in total length between 300cm and 700cm. Overall, the lunging whip must be long enough so that you can still easily touch the horse while it is moving. This is the only way to actively influence the horse. Touchier whips are therefore less suitable for real lunge work, as the lash is much shorter. Instead, they are used for ground work. 

Are there different lunge whips for horses?  

There are different types of lunging whips. Practical telescopic lunging whips and detachable lunging whips are a good solution if you only have limited space available. Telescopic lunge whips are collapsible and can be extended to form a whip again for the next use. 2-piece lunging whips make it easie to handle, transport and store them for everyday use and at competitions. These extendable lunge whips are space-saving, durable and sturdy to use.

For easy handling, it is important that the lunge whip is light and comfortable to use. For this reason, models made of plastic and lunging whips made of fibreglass are particularly popular, as they are extremely light. Carbon lunge whips are also extremely flexible and very sturdy.
